Prescription Drug Abuse

the hidden epidemic

More than half of the most commonly abused controlled substances are prescription medications.

Prescription Drug Abuse

Prescription drug addiction is often referred to as “the hidden epidemic”. The Family Counseling Center has developed a program of cooperation with local physicians to assist in treating this population. FCCR psychiatrists and their staff will work with a client’s primary care physician to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Many clients become dependent while being treated for other conditions. Anxiety and chronic pain treatment can often lead to dependence upon medications. While the referring physician will provide treatment for any pain or medical conditions, the FCCR staff can begin an outpatient detoxification program, if indicated. During the detoxification process, clients will learn safe alternative methods to assist them with ongoing symptoms.

The following services are available to assist with this “hidden addiction”:
• Assessment by a team of clinicians, nurses and addiction psychiatrists
• Collaboration with referring physicians to develop treatment plans
• Outpatient detoxification, if indicated
• Individual, group and family therapy
• Auricular Acupuncture for withdrawal symptoms
• Development of a support system for ongoing recovery
• Appropriate, non-addictive medications for anxiety and depression
• Methadone and Buprenorphine detox and maintenance programs

The Family Counseling Center for Recovery offers the full continuum of outpatient care from assessment and ambulatory detoxification to ongoing therapy for long-term recovery. We work closely with inpatient hospitals and treatment centers when inpatient care is indicated.

Referring Hospitals: Please call our Nursing Director at either office. If the nurse is not available please leave a message including the following information:

• Patient name
• Substance being abused
• Any psychiatric complications
• Referrals should arrive with copies of any hospital tests
